UPDATE: A memorial service for Officer Matthew Ward will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. at SeaCoast Grace Church, 5100 Cerritos Ave. in Cypress.
With great sadness, the Brandman community mourns the loss of Cypress Police Officer Matthew Ward, who graduated from the university in 2013 with his master’s in public administration.
Ward, 33, died after a car accident on Sunday, according to the Cypress Police Department.
“We are saddened to learn of the death of Matt Ward, father, friend, and police officer for the city of Cypress. Matt typified leadership and care for others; strong ideals found in the men and women in the public service,” said David Gonzalez, Jr., assistant professor of public administration and organizational leadership in Brandman University’s School of Business and Professional Studies.
“Matt’s commitment to doing the ‘people’s business’ included a vision for the future and this was evident by his mentoring of young Police Explorers and in his time at Brandman in the MPA program. It was obvious that he performed his role as a community leader with heart, diligence, and care; characteristics that are so important in a person who protects and pursues peace in the name of community.”
“My heart goes out to his family, his police family including the Police Explorers he mentored, and the good people of Cypress who will all miss him dearly.”
Ward is survived by his wife and two young sons. Contributions to his family can be made to a memorial established on Go Fund Me.
Brandman University extends its sympathies to Ward’s family, friends, the communities he served and his colleagues in the Cypress Police Department.
