Chief Master Sgt. Steven Shulz awarded Commander’s Certificate for Distinguished Faculty
Steve Shulz came to Brandman University in 2011 as the first graduate of the MAOL Military Studies Program, after earning his Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University.
“I didn’t want to finish school because I was enjoying it too much,” Shulz said of enrolling in Brandman at Joint Base Lewis–McChord. “Brandman offered organizational leadership, and at that time of my career, I was moving from a front line supervisor into a higher level management role. I had a hankering for human behavior, how to lead people.”
In almost three decades of military service, 12 years were active duty, four as a reservist, and more than 12 as a Washington air guardsman. Shulz qualified for an array of Air Force Specialty Skill Codes (AFSC), including jet engine craftsman, computer network operator, cyber defense operator and targeting intelligence. He holds the rank of chief master sergeant and is the superintendent of the 194th Communications Flight.
Shulz accepted an active tour with Counterdrug Task Force in August of 2010 where he works full time as the director of training for the Western Region Counterdrug Training Center (WRCTC), one of five national training centers. He is responsible for the direction and execution of regional training objectives for local law enforcement, federal agencies, and combatant commanders, as directed by the deputy assistant secretary of Defense.
As an adjunct instructor with Brandman University since November 2013, he teaches a number of undergraduate and graduate level leadership classes, both online and blended. Shulz said he considers himself more of a facilitator than a teacher and enjoys the face-to-face interaction blended classes provide that allow a much more interactive learning experience.
When he’s not working, Shulz and his wife, Mina, are growing their brewery. They are the owners and brewers of East 2 West (E2W) Brewing. They received their official license in August 2016 after being home brewers since 2012. They truly enjoy the craft of brewing and their slogan of “beer crafted by beer lovers, for beer lovers” shows in their product. They have their beer in five local establishments and produce about five barrels (150 gallons) of beer per month.
