Angelo Clements Jr. spent the first part of his career in the U.S. Air Force where he had top-secret security clearance and held various positions at the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). After 22 years of active duty, he attended Brandman University to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational leadership, graduating magna cum laude.
Today, Clements is a supply chain specialist for Boeing in Huntington Beach, CA. He is a founding member of the Brandman University – Chapman University Alumni Association. Clements is continuing his education by pursuing a Masters of Arts in organizational leadership (M.A.O.L.) at Brandman University.
How did going back to school help you and your career?
It expanded my understanding of how people interact, revealed shortfalls within those interactions, and allowed me to use newly developed skills to fill needed areas in communication and leadership. After completing my degree at Chapman University College/Brandman University, I landed a contract position at Boeing. That led to a full-time role and I have now been with the company for over seven years.
Who inspired you while attending Brandman?
Each Brandman University instructor led me to believe, by providing knowledge and resources, that I was capable of making positive impacts in the lives of people. I was especially impacted by Ladd Graham, campus director of the former Manhattan Beach campus as he and his staff truly personalized my relationship with them and the university. This was significant for me.
What advice would you give someone going back to school as an adult?
I would say recognize that returning to school is a commitment and you must do all which is necessary for success. As an example, obtain books, computer equipment/programs ahead of time. Also, it is vital to have a support person or network who will not only understand what you are attempting to achieve but also will provide support (emotional and physical).
Did anything surprise you about Brandman University?
I was impressed by the quality of Brandman instructors who were absolutely committed to providing their students with the knowledge and skills to help with their career development.
What would you have done differently?
I would have attempted to expand my personal and professional network with like-minded students.
What motivated you while going back to school?
I was emboldened by actively having a positive impact, on a daily basis, with coworkers utilizing those newly learned skills and equally excited to learn even more.
